9:00 Arrival and opening circle

9:30 am - 12:00 pm  Zimbabwean Marimba and Hip Hop Dance

Learn and explore the oral legacy of African Marimbas in the tradition of Zimbabwe.  Master Teacher Ronnie Dailiyo guides students in an IN PERSON intensive course that is a staple in the foundation of our students' musicianship and development at the Oakland Public Conservatory of Music.

12:00- 1:00 pm Lunch and lunch time activities

1:00pm - 3:00pm Son Umbé: Sounds of Afro-Mexico 

Son Umbé is an urban youth ensemble that centers the Afro-Mexican experience through an exploration and study of Son Jarocho, folk music of Veracruz, Mexico. In Son Umbé students learn to play traditional string and percussion instruments, as well as traditional dance and song. This SMA session will focus on learning to play the traditional strummed jarana and will include visual art projects.
